Dr. Balamurali Krishna

Balamurali Krishna was born in a family of musicians in a village in Andhra Pradesh. His father, Pattabiramayya, played the flute, violin and veena and his mother, Suryakantamma, was an excellent veena player. Balamurali took to such instruments as the violin, viola, khanjira, veena and mridangam with ease. Giving his first concert at the age of eight, he became an enormously popular artiste by the time he was 15.

With songs composed in all the 72 melakarta ragas, Balamurali has enriched Carnatic music with varnams, kritis, javalis, devotionals and thillanas, which together number more than 400.

He is the State Musician of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, the Asthana Vidwan of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, Sringeri Peetam and Adivyadhi Hara Baktha Anjaneya Swami Temple, Nanganallur.

Some of the new ragas credited to him are Mahati, Sumukham, Trisakthi, Omkari, Rohini, Pratimadhyamavathi, Janasammodini, Manorama, Vallabhi, Lavangi, etc. He also innovated the tala system by introducing new principles.

His greatest asset, however, is his vibrant, wide-ranged, magnetic voice over which he has perfect control in all the three octaves. With his crystal clear enunciation of the sahitya (lyric), the buoyant quality of his ever-fresh voice, and unpredictable swara-combination which flows with impressive ease, Balamurali has mesmerised audiences all over the country and abroad.

Crowned by the Padma Vibhushan, the other awards bagged by him include the national award for the best music director for Madhavacharya (1987) and best playback singer for Hamsa Geetha.
